Kinetic Diffusion is a groundbreaking solo dance performance and interactive installation utilizing AI image generation technology to nterrogate the collaborative process between artists and AI. The project is built with our custom AI platform built with Stable Diffusion that creates real-time projections in the environment through a camera input. The platform allows for interactive prompting and cueing, providing creativity flexibility. Through it’s dual performance and installation formats Kinetic Diffusion builds on the history of dancemakers collaborating with technology by merging theatrical spectacle with hands-on education to take a complex and often alienating technology and make it embodied, approachable, and dynamic.
The PERFORMANCE
The 20 minute solo dance performance explores the journey and tension of a choreographer discovering the opportunity and danger of AI. From encounter to confrontation to harmony, the dance unfolds, as the onstage cameras capture the movement of the performer in real time, merging AI and dancer.
THE INSTALLATION
The installation acts as a companion piece to the performance and creates an opportunity for participants to learn about AI through artistic play. Here, they get to step in front of the camera and move their bodies to interact with real-time AI imagery and prompt generation. Kinetic Diffusion manifests a reflection of participants transformed by AI at 24 frames per second. As participants move, their AI representation moves along with them.
